Seeking research on value of participation

Hi folks – participation by those who do the work in the design of the work has been a core “mantra” ever since I can remember.  BUT, is there any research that actually shows that widespread participation in organization design actually improves the quality of the design work?

Sure we know (going back to Lewins work on participative action research) that implementation is easier when people have participated. And we know from research that diverse perspectives add to the quality of solutions in general. And we know from the Emery’s that participative design is essential to participative democracy – so this comes close.

But can anyone share with me the research that connects participation with the quality of the design?

Speed is of the essence here 🙂

Thanks, bernard,  bjmohr@innovationpartners.com

  1. Bernard,
I am going to send you a couple of documents. One I co authored with Ellen Scully-Ross and an assessment of impact of participation of farmworkers and managers in the Equitable Food Initiative.
    My email has changed kboyle@equitablefood.org
