If so, might we open the floor to questions for him before we continue? 13:55:57 From Doug To Everyone: Yes. 13:56:00 From Peter Sorenson To Everyone: You heard correctly. 13:57:21 From @TerriGriffith To Everyone: One of Ozlem’s publication: Six human-centered artificial intelligence grand challenges https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/10447318.2022.2153320 13:57:55 From Doug To Everyone: Thank you. 13:58:34 From Steven Alter To Everyone: Ben Shneiderman provided an inspiring set of goals and governance expectations for HCAI. What are the comparable goals and governance expectations that the STS roundtable might be able to articulate? How would those goals and governance expectations apply to companies in areas such as media, food, military, contracting, government organizations, etc.? If those goals and governance expectations can be articulated, what would lead to their adoption in the real world? 13:59:24 From Peter Sorenson To Everyone: Excellent Questions that we must address Steve. 14:01:13 From Ozlem Garibay To Everyone: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/10447318.2022.2153320 14:01:37 From Ozlem Garibay To Everyone: The link to our paper is above 14:02:21 From Ozlem Garibay To Everyone: Happy to answer any questions. We will do our best to address as many as we can. 14:17:17 From Wei Xu To Everyone: AI projects are no longer an engineering/tech project, it should be a STS project. HCAI needs the STS perspective, it is a win-win game for the collaboration. From STS perspective, it is transitioning from "mechanical STS" (1950s time by Tavistock), --> digital STS (computing tech), --> now intelligent STS (iSTS), do we see the emerging characteristics in AI era that lead us to think about how to enhance STS approach / framework to help develop human-centered AI systems 14:17:40 From Marcela Urteaga To Everyone: Reacted to "AI projects are no l..." with ❤️ 14:19:00 From Doug To Everyone: Reacted to "AI projects are no l..." with ❤️ 14:19:43 From Terri Adkisson To Everyone: Reacted to "AI projects are no l..." with 👍 14:20:47 From Peter Sorenson To Everyone: Reacted to "AI projects are no l..." with 👍 14:27:58 From Tuğbagül Altan Gulgun To Everyone: Reacted to "AI projects are no l..." with 🤙 14:28:30 From Tuğbagül Altan Gulgun To Everyone: Removed a 🤙 reaction from "AI projects are no l..." 14:28:32 From Tuğbagül Altan Gulgun To Everyone: Reacted to "AI projects are no l..." with 👍 14:29:22 From @TerriGriffith To Everyone: Interesting suggestions & Canadian data from KPMG https://assets.kpmg.com/content/dam/kpmg/ca/pdf/2023/08/kpmg-in-canadas-generative-ai-adoption-index-2023.pdf 14:37:03 From Steven Alter To Everyone: There is no agreement about what AI means. (e.g., ChatGPT is not particularly related to the internal operation of digital cameras or to the use of machine learning by radiologists). Given that, I think that the discussion of the overlaps between STS and HCAI has two possible paths: 1) Produce an agreed upon definition of what AI is, and then do projects related to improving work practices by using AI, improving organizations, improving work-related deliberations, determining the impact of AI, etc. 2) Agree not to bother to define AI . Avoid the term AI when discussing AI applications. Pursue HCAI as though it is a synonym of human centered automation, human centered IT applications, human centered new technology usage, or something similar. That would increase the likelihood that people would think about how to improve work practices and would reduce the tendency to discuss AI and its impacts while having very little clarity about what others in the discussion are thinking about. 14:44:39 From Marcia Murphy To Everyone: Reacted to "AI projects are no l..." with ❤️ 14:48:11 From @TerriGriffith To Everyone: I’d like to keep the AI term — just have us be more specific as we go. I think we gain from a marketing/influence perspective (people will acknowledge that they don’t have the full picture as “AI” comes into our work and be willing to “stop-look-listen”). The possible reason to keep AI in the story is that some applications are different. Agency is more of an issue now than in the past. 14:51:00 From Marcela Urteaga To Everyone: Reacted to "I’d like to keep the..." with 👍 14:51:01 From Wei Xu To Everyone: Reacted to "I’d like to keep the..." with 👍 14:51:31 From Doug To Everyone: Reacted to "I’d like to keep the..." with 👍 14:51:34 From Adam Daniow To Everyone: I totally agree with Stu's suggestion, I think an updated look at STS methodology for the 2020's is much needed. 14:52:07 From Adam Daniow To Everyone: I would suggest we schedule a meeting asap for those who are interested in looking at the question 14:52:13 From Marcela Urteaga To Everyone: Reacted to "I totally agree with..." with ❤️ 14:53:13 From Nancy Dixon To Everyone: I am particularly interested in the democratic aspects of this collaboration 14:53:17 From Steven Alter To Everyone: Replying to "I’d like to keep the..." Actually, I saw a webinar in which Ben Shneiderman basically said that most of HCAI applies to most automation projects except that interest in AI is so hot now that we should call it HCAI. 14:53:25 From Eli Berniker To Everyone: There is no choice but to incorporate AI if only because it is a primary component in many technical systems. The human role will be to make sense of there more complex systems. 14:53:32 From @TerriGriffith To Everyone: Reacted to "Actually, I saw a we..." with 👍🏻 14:53:35 From Marcela Urteaga To Everyone: Reacted to "There is no choice b..." with ❤️ 14:53:57 From Doug To Everyone: Reacted to "There is no choice b..." with ❤️ 14:54:36 From Adam Daniow To Everyone: Reacted to "There is no choice b..." with ❤️ 14:54:49 From Tuğbagül Altan Gulgun To Everyone: AI has not a clear definition.
